Comedy writer and American actor Larry Shue has penned The Nerd, a two-act play. British comedian Rowan Atkinson is one of the actors who has stepped into the lead role. Among 1986's West End productions, it was the highest-grossing American musical. A staged reading of The Nerd occurred at the former Court Street Theater during the 1979–1980 season at Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Due to its overwhelming success, it was given its world premiere in April 1981 at the PAC's Todd Wehr Theater during the following season on Main Stage. Author Larry Shue portrayed Willum Cubbert.
The Quadracci Powerhouse Theater was remounted in 1995–96, and Stiemke Studio in 2006–07. The Milwaukee Repertory Theater staged The Nerd for the fourth time during the 2019–20 season. The European premiere of the play took place in 1982. Starring Derek Griffiths as Rick and David Horovitch as Willum, it was directed by Braham Murray and took place at the Royal Exchange, Manchester. Between March 22, 1987, and April 10, 1988, the play, directed by Charles Nelson Reilly and starring Mark Hamill, traveled 441 performances along Broadway.
There were some departures from the script in the 1987 performance, such as when Willum's partygoers started eating deviled eggs and Robert Joy's character, Rick, squawked like a bird. Joy later sprayed Redi-Whip into his mouth. John Dye, Harley Jane Kozak, and Robert Joy (returning to his role) were part of a 1989 NBC comedy pilot based on the play. The episode aired in March 1996, even though a series wasn't optioned.
