Set in modern-day New York City, this reimagined and remixed rendition of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece presents an identical plot. In the original story, Maria-Clara and the Nutcracker Prince continue their quest to defeat mice and reach the Land of Sweets. This traditional holiday performance takes a hip-hop and rap musical approach, adding visual elements and digital graffiti. The event starts with MC Kurtis Blow's act, often seen as a pioneer of hip-hop and rap. Moreover, he appears multiple times in the show.
The Hip Hop Nutcracker features an orchestra that gives the traditional score a hip-hop makeover. Backflips and poplocks are incorporated into the dance routine as the plot develops. The musical opens with a group of kids gazing at a Christmas tree. Upon Drosselmeyer, the toymaker's arrival, the kids are presented with presents. The Nutcracker doll belonged to Drosselmeyer and was given to Clara. Enviously, Fritz breaks the doll that belongs to Clara. The Nutcracker ballet begins that night as the tree's playthings come to life.
