Criminal proceedings regarding the aggravated assault and rape of a white lady were at the center of the Central Park jogger case (also known as the Central Park Five Case). On April 19, 1989, it occurred in Central Park in Manhattan, New York, along with a series of other assaults that had nothing to do with each other.
After being tried and convicted of assaulting the woman, five black and Latino teenagers (originally dubbed the Central Park Five and later renamed the Exonerated Five) received sentences varying from six to twelve years in prison. One of the inmates was eventually admitted, and all the charges were dropped.
As soon as news of the case broke, it became a major subject of discussion nationwide. At first, it stoked public concern about crime, particularly youth crime, and brutality against women, in New York City. Since the dismissal, the case has been widely used to illustrate the pervasiveness of racial profiling, prejudice, and inequality in the American justice system and the media. The City of New York resolved a lawsuit filed by five defendants in 2014 for $41 million. The defendants claimed they were victims of malicious prosecution, racial discrimination, and emotional distress.
