Ta-Nehisi Paul Coates (September 30, 1975) is an American journalist and author. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland. Before graduating from Woodlawn High School, Coates spent time at William H. Lemmel Middle School and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in the Baltimore area. The following five years, he spent at Howard University before dropping out to pursue a career in journalism. Nobody else in his immediate family has gone to college but him. Coates spent the middle of 2014 enrolled in an intense French program at Middlebury College in anticipation of a writing fellowship in Paris.
Coates got his start in the media industry as a reporter for The Washington City Paper under David Carr. Coates was a journalist for several outlets between 2000 and 2007, including Philadelphia Weekly, The Village Voice, and Time. A new, more secure phase of his career began with his first article for The Atlantic, "This Is How We Lost to the White Man," on Bill Cosby and conservatism.
Coates was promoted to senior editor at The Atlantic, where he contributed feature articles and ran a personal blog. The blog discussed current events, history, race relations, cultural practices, and even sports and music.
