Swan Lake Information
The ballet Swan Lake, Op. 20, was written by the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875 and 1876. It was a flop when it premiered, but it has become a classic now. The narrative of Odette, a princess transformed into a swan by a wicked sorcerer's curse, is told in the opera's first two acts. It was adapted from Russian and German traditional stories. Julius Reisinger (Václav Reisinger) was the original production's choreographer.
On March 4, [O.S. February 20], 1877, the Bolshoi Ballet performed the ballet for the first time at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Composers considered "specialists" in scoring the airy, decorative, melodic, and rhythmically straightforward music popular for ballet penned the vast majority of ballet scores from the turn of the 19th century until the beginning of the 1890s.
Before beginning to work on Swan Lake, Tchaikovsky learned about the music of "specialists" like Cesare Pugni from Italy and Ludwig Minkus from Austria. The San Francisco Ballet presented the first full-length American performance of Swan Lake in 1940. Lew Christensen played Prince Siegfried, Jacqueline Martin was Odette, and Janet Reed was Odile in the smash hit performance.
Ballet dancer and choreographer from South Africa, Dada Masilo, reimagined Tchaikovsky's masterpiece in 2010. Her interpretation was a blend of traditional ballet and African dance. She also added a twist to the story by making Odile (the black swan) a homosexual male swan.
