Susan Orlean (October 31, 1955) is a bestselling American author, television writer, and journalist. She's been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1992, and she's written for Vogue, Rolling Stone, Esquire, and Outside, among others. Orlean joined the HBO comedy series How To with John Wilson's creative team in 2021. She is best known for her novel The Orchid Thief, which was turned into the film Adaptation in 1998. (2002).
Orlean's work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Esquire, Vogue, Outside, and Spy, among other publications. She joined the Boston Phoenix as a staff writer in 1982 and later became a frequent contributor to the Boston Globe Sunday Magazine. Saturday Night was her debut book, released in 1990, shortly after she came to New York City from Boston and started writing for The New Yorker magazine. In 1987, she began contributing to The New Yorker, and in 1992, she was hired as a staff writer.
Orlean also penned the 1998 essay "Life's Swell" for Women's Outside. The film Blue Crush was based on an article about a group of teenage Maui surfer ladies. Susan Sistrom, her married name, co-wrote The Skinny: What Every Skinny Woman Knows About Dieting (And Won't Tell You!) in 1999.
