Step Afrika Information
Step Afrika is an American professional dance company founded in 1994 by C.Brian Williams. The dance company was created dedicatedly to the tradition of stepping under Mr. Williams’ leadership. Over time, stepping has evolved into one of America’s cultural exports. Step Afrika has toured more than 60 countries worldwide and is ranked as one of the top ten African-American dance companies in the United States. The dance company blends percussive dance styles practiced by African American sororities and fraternities.
Step Afrika’s dance performances are much more than a dance show. The audience enjoys integrating songs, humor, storytelling, and their full participation during the performance. The audience’s heart pounds with a blend of agility, energy, and technique in each performance of the show. The dance company promotes stepping as education for young people. Their focus is on teamwork, cross-cultural understanding, and academy achievement. Each year, Step Afrika performs in front of tens and thousands of Americans through a 50-city tour of theater and colleges.
Step Afrika also performs globally as Washington, DC’s one and only Cultural Ambassador. The dance company has won Mayor’s Arts Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education, Excellence in an Artistic Discipline, Innovation in the Arts, and headlining Black History Month Reception at The White House for President Barack Obama.
