Sonia Manzano Information
Sonia Manzano (1950) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, screenwriter, and author. She was born in South Bronx, New York. She is widely recognized for her role as Maria on Sesame Street, which spanned from 1971 until 2015. 2016, she was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Daytime Emmys. She received a full ride to study at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University. She moved to New York during her junior year to be in the first off-Broadway production of Godspell.
In 1971, Manzano began working on the Sesame Street scripts after joining the show's production staff. After 44 years on the show, Manzano announced her retirement on June 29, 2015. However, Manzano did return to her role as Maria for Sesame Street's 50th Anniversary Celebration in 2019. She has appeared in The Vaginal Monologues and The Exonerated, both of which took place on the New York stage.
Twice, Manzano was nominated for an Emmy as the Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series. Manzano received 15 Emmys for his work on Sesame Street. One of the trading cards from the 1979 Supersisters collection featured Manzano's likeness and name. She received a star on the Bronx Walk of Fame in 2004. A Lifetime Achievement Emmy was awarded to her on May 1, 2016.
