Snow White Information
The fairy tale "Snow White" from the 19th century has achieved international renown. It was first published by the Grimm brothers in 1812 as number 53 in the first edition of their collection Grimms' Fairy Tales. The Low German Sneewittchen gave way to the High German Schneeweißchen in the first edition, and the resulting hyphenated form Schneewittchen became the standard way to refer to the story in Germany.
In 1854, the Grimms finished the final story draft that would eventually appear in the 1857 edition of Grimms' Fairy Tales. The Evil Queen, the Seven Dwarfs, and other characters appear in the story, as do the enchanted mirror, the poisoned apple, and the glass coffin. In the 1912 Broadway play Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, each of the seven dwarfs had a unique name; in Walt Disney's 1937 film, the dwarfs were given new names.
The Brothers Grimm's "Snow-White and Rose-Red" (German: "Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot") fairy tale is not to be mistaken with the more well-known "Snow White" tale. Such stories are classified as Snow White Type 709 in the Aarne-Thompson Folktale Classification System. The songs "Bella Venezia," "Myrsina," "Nourie Hadig," "Gold-Tree," "The Young Slave," and "La petite Toute-Belle" are all examples of this genre.
