Shumka 60-Tour is a tour that has returned after decades of performances near and far. Shumka means “whirlwind,” a powerful display of energy, artistry, and emotion through dance. The Ukrainian Shumka Dancers’ signature dance style has been shaped by the 60 years of performance history. Shumka 60 pays respect to their heritage, and the tour continually challenges conventional boundaries to define the experience of Ukraine Canadian dance today.
Shumka 60 was called “Canada’s National Treasure” by the Toronto Star, while its work is compared to Riverdance. Shumka 60 features two new works that are a regional dance spectacular showcasing the vibrant character of colorful regions of Ukraine and intricate footwork; and a salute to the past with the help of an adaptation of Shumka’s celebrated Classic Hopak.
TCU Place and Ukrainian Shumka Dancers host Shumka 60-Tour. The vision behind the show is to express the human experience through the ever-evolving Canadian-Ukrainian dance form. The tour exists to promote, present, develop, share, and preserve Canadian-Ukrainian inspired dance as a community leader.
