Shrine Circus Information
The Shrine Circus was established on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan 1906. It visits over 120 U.S. cities annually, while another unit visits around 40 in Canada. It ties to Shriners International, once known as the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine.
By 1925, the circus had expanded from its basic one-ring show to three rings. The Detroit affair remains the largest, even though it is now moving to several locations. It was the longest-running and most attended Shrine Circus in 1996, running for 17 days and including 40 performances.
In the 1920s, shrine circuses spread nationwide, with more and more localities hosting them each year. In January, Flint, Michigan, hosts the annual Shrine Circus. From then until November, the circus will visit a new city every week.
New Orleans, Louisiana, and Evansville, Indiana, often host the final performances over Thanksgiving week. Because of Hurricane Katrina, the 2005 season was rescheduled from New Orleans to Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The name of the host Shrine in each geographic location is typically appended to the phrase "Shrine Circus" when used in this context. Clyde Beatty, Emmett Kelly, the Flying Concellos, the Hannefords, and the Zacchini brothers are just a few of the circus greats who have performed in Shrine Circuses throughout the years.
