Scheherazade Information
Nikolai Rimsky-symphonic Korsakov's suite Scheherazade, sometimes known as Sheherazade, was composed in 1888 and is based on One Thousand and One Nights. This orchestral composition combines two characteristics of Russian music in general and of Rimsky-Korsakov in particular: bright, colorful orchestration and an interest in the East, which had a significant role in Imperial Russia's history, as well as orientalism in general. The name "Scheherazade" comes from the main character of the Thousand and One Nights, Scheherazade. It is one of Rimsky-most Korsakov's well-known compositions.
The Ballets Russes premiered the original ballet adaptation of Scheherazade on June 4, 1910, at the Opéra Garnier in Paris. Michel Fokine choreographed the ballet, while Fokine and Léon Bakst collaborated on the libretto. Scheherazade by the Ballet Russes is notable for its sparkling costumes, lavish scenery, and sensual dance and narrative, which were uncommon in ballets.
Rimsky-Korsakov composed a brief introduction to accompany the piece and the program for the premiere: The Sultan is represented by the ominous bass line that opens the opening section. This theme highlights four notes from a descending whole-tone scale: E–D–C–B
In the first movement, the tight link between E and C major demonstrates Rimsky-inclination Korsakov's to juxtaposition keys a major third apart. This, together with his characteristic orchestration of clearly accessible melodies, constructed rhythms, and talent for soloistic composing, enabled him to compose Scheherazade.
