Sarge, who was born between a Black father and a Jewish mother during the civil rights movement, was placed for adoption shortly after birth and subsequently lived with a couple from Long Island who belonged to the upper-middle class. Arriving home after seeing The Sound of Music on Broadway at the tender age of six, he took his first seat at the piano and proceeded to perform the songs he had heard.
