RuPaul Andre Charles (November 17, 1960) is an American model, musician, television judge, and drag queen. He was born in San Diego, California. After that, RuPaul went to the Atlanta, Georgia, School of Performing Arts. After relocating to New York, he became prominent in the city's LGBT club scene. After the release of his first hit, "Supermodel (You Better Work)," from the album of the same name, he became a household name around the world (1993). In 1994, he became the first drag queen to land a big cosmetics campaign as the spokesman for MAC Cosmetics, where he helped raise money for the company's Mac AIDS Fund.
In the United States, fourteen seasons of RuPaul's Drag Race have aired since the show's inception in 2009. Numerous international adaptations of the show, such as RuPaul's Drag Race in the UK and Canada's Drag Race, attest to the show's popularity worldwide. Several offshoots of the original program have been created due to this phenomenon; these include RuPaul's Drag U, RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars, and RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race.
According to Fortune, "arguably the world's most famous drag queen," RuPaul is the most financially successful drag queen in the United States. In recognition of his work on RuPaul's Drag Race, RuPaul has been honored with 12 Primetime Emmy Awards, making him the most decorated person of color in Primetime Emmy history.
