Robert Earl “Kool” Bell (October 8, 1950) is an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He was born in Youngstown, Ohio, and grew up in New Jersey. Bell is known as one of the founding members of the American funk band called Kool & the Gang. His music incorporates different genres such as boogie, disco, dance-pop, funk, soul, R&B, and jazz. He has been performing music actively since 1964. Bell is also known by his Muslim name, Kool Muhammad Bayyan.
Bell started to play jazz along with his brother, Ronald Bell. They kept playing together and soon founded a group in 1964 and named it “Jazziacs.” The group started playing at clubs in New York City under several band names before they stuck with the name “Kool & the Gang” in 1968. Bell is also one of the song’s co-writers entitled “Boardmeeting” from the 2007 album Timbaland Presents Shock Value.
His notable singles include “Jungle Boogie,” “Ladies Night,” “Fresh,” “Cherish,” “Summer Madness,” “Celebration,” “Going Down On it,” “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”, “Take My Heart,” “Too Hot,” “Hollywood Swinging,” “Let’s Go Dancing,” “Hi De Hi Hi De Ho,” and “Straight Ahead.”
