Richmond Ballet Information
The Richmond Ballet, founded in 1957, is a theater and school designated the State Ballet of Virginia by Governor Douglas Wilder in 1990. Richmond Ballet, founded in 1984, was the first professional ballet company in Virginia, and in 1990, Governor L. Douglas Wilder officially named it the State Ballet of Virginia. Minds In Motion, an educational outreach initiative of the Richmond Ballet, was established that year. It incorporates a pedestrian-oriented movement curriculum taught to 4th graders around the Commonwealth.
The contemporary work "Phoenix Rising," choreographed by Philip Neal, a graduate of the Richmond Ballet school and a dancer with the New York City Ballet for 23 years, premiered in 2013 during the company's 30th season. In April 2007 and again in 2010, Richmond Ballet performed at The Joyce Theater as part of tributes to American master choreographer John Butler.
The Richmond Ballet first performed outside the United States in the Linbury Theatre at the Royal Opera House in London 2012. The Richmond Ballet visited China in 2015. A highlight of their time in China was at the National Centre for the Performing Arts for the "Meet in Beijing" Arts Festival and Jinan, Dezhou, and Shanghai.
