Richard Powers Information
Richard Powers (June 18, 1957) is an American novelist. He was born in Evanston, Illinois. While living abroad, he gained expertise in vocal music and the cello, guitar, saxophone, and clarinet. He also developed into an ardent reader, favoring nonfiction books in particular and timeless works like the Iliad and the Odyssey. Powers worked in biochemist Aaron Straight's lab at Stanford University as a Stein Visiting Writer in 2010 and 2013, respectively.
Powers was appointed the Phil and Penny Knight Professor of Creative Writing in the Department of English, Stanford University, announced on August 22, 2013. Powers relocated to Boston to work as a programmer after using PLATO to master computer programming at Illinois. Powers was so moved when he saw the August Sander photograph "Young Farmers" from 1914 on a Saturday in 1980 at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston that he left his job two days later to write a book about the individuals in the picture.
Powers authored Operation Wandering Soul in 1993 about a young pediatrician in excruciating pain. It was a National Book Award finalist. Gain, a 1998 novel by Powers, is the story of a 150-year-old chemical firm and the ovarian cancer death of a lady who lives next to one of its plants. In 1999, it took home the James Fenimore Cooper Award for Best Historical Fiction.
