Rapunzel Information
Rapunzel is a fairy tale story first published in 1812 as part of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Their story is an adaptation of the fairy tale Rapunzel by Friedrich Schulz (1790) that was a translation of Persinette (1698) by Charlotte-Rose de Caumont de La Force.
The plot of Rapunzel is about a lonely couple who long for a child. They live next to a large, extensive garden with high-walls belonging to the sorceress. The wife started noticing some Rapunzel, which means either a Valerianella locusta (a salad green) or Campanula rapunculus (an edible root vegetable and salad green). It was growing in the nearby garden, and the mother began to long for it, refusing to eat anything that resulted in her wasting away.
The husband fears for his wife’s life, so he gathers courage and breaks into the garden to get some Rapunzel one night. He returned, and his wife made a salad. She eats it but craves more so the husband would return to the garden and bring more. While he was scaling the wall to return home, the sorceress catches him and accuses the husband of theft. The story goes on in such an interesting way. There have been numerous adaptations of the story including in film and plays.
