Pilobolus is an American modern dance company. The company began performing back in October 1971. It has performed in more than 64 countries where the company has exhibited its amazing work for over 100 times. Pilobolus has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and 79th Annual Academy Awards. The company is named after the study of the father, Jonathan Wolken. His research was based on the phototropic fungus. The fungus grows on the cow dung. It propels itself with accuracy, speed, and strength at an extraordinary level.
Pilobolus was founded in 1971 when a group of students from Dartmouth College planned to form a company. The company is based in Washington Depot, Connecticut. It has offices in Belgium and New York City. Pilobolus tours both internationally and domestically. Founding members include Alison Becker Chase, Jonathan Wolken, Lee Harris, Martha Clarke, Moses Pendleton, Michael Tracy, and Robby Barnett.
Pilobolus made its Broadway debut at St. James Theatre. A strong element of physical interaction between the performers’ bodies portrays the beauty of Pilobolus performances. The company collaborated with Arthur Yorinks and Maurice Sendak when the production of “A Selection” was going on. In 2007, they appeared as performers in 79th Academy Awards that was broadcasted on the television.
Pilobolus has three main courses in their Dance theatre; an educational programming arm where they teach the creative process to the group-based company, a touring company that works through collaborating on international projects, and last but not least; innovative services that offer movement services for advertising, publishing, film, corporate events, and commercial clients.
