Until its rebranding in 2021, Philadelphia Ballet, formerly known as Pennsylvania Ballet, was the city's preeminent ballet group. The Nutcracker by George Balanchine, a Philadelphia holiday tradition, is one of six performances in the company's annual local season, including new works. Angel Corella is in charge of the creative direction of the business.
Barbara Weisberger, a student of George Balanchine, founded Pennsylvania Ballet in 1963 as part of a Ford Foundation program to create regional professional dance groups. The company's dedication to the works of George Balanchine has made it an important part of Philadelphia's cultural landscape.
After making its debut at New York City Center in 1968, the company went on a nationwide tour for the next decade, made several appearances on PBS's "Dance in America" series, and served as the official company of the Brooklyn Academy of Music in the 1970s.
1982 Pennsylvania Ballet made history by promoting Debra Austin, an African-American woman, to principal dancer. She was the first to achieve such a position at a prominent American ballet company. In an unusual move, Pennsylvania Ballet and Milwaukee Ballet joined forces between 1987 and 1989 to form a single organization. With 43 dancers on staff, this new company was the first in the nation to hire dancers year-round.
