Pete Souza Information
Peter Joseph Souza (December 31, 1954) is an American photojournalist. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Souza earned his B.S. in public communication from Boston University and his M.S. in writing and mass communication from Kansas State University, both with highest honors. Souza's professional life began in the 1970s at the Chanute Tribune and the Hutchinson News in Kansas. He worked as a photojournalist for the Chicago Sun-Times in the early 1980s.
From June 1983 until 1989, he worked as Ronald Reagan's official White House photographer. 2004 he was also the designated photographer for Ronald Reagan's memorial services. Souza remained in Washington, D.C., after the Reagan presidency ended. He was a photojournalist for the Chicago Tribune's Washington, D.C., branch from 1998 to 2007. Freelance work for National Geographic and Life publications can also be added to Souza's resume. After 9/11, he was one of the first reporters to go to Afghanistan to report on the conflict and the subsequent fall of Kabul.
A new Chief Official White House Photographer for President Joe Biden was appointed in January 2021, and Souza offered his guidance to Adam Schultz. He also pointed out that Shealah Craighead, Trump's outgoing photographer, uploaded "very few behind-the-scenes pictures" to Flickr.
