Parsons Dance Information
Parsons Dance is a contemporary dance company that was founded on July 17, 1985, by choreographer David Parsons along with lighting designer Howell Binkley. Since its inception, the dance company has toured nationally and internationally and has an annual season in New York. The company originated from New York, and since its founding day, Parsons Dance has traveled to six continents. It is the only dance company in history to perform at all three Spoleto Festivals in a single season in Australia, France, and the US.
Since 1985, Parsons Dance has toured an average of 32 weeks per year. This totals more than 235 cities, 30 countries, six continents, and of course, millions of the audiences. The dance company also performed on Bravo, A&E Network, PBS, and the Discovery Channel. A large audience witnessed Parson Dance perform live in Times Square as part of an internationally broadcast and on 24-hour Millennium New Year’s Eve celebration. The company has also been featured at The Joyce Theater, Guggenheim Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art and The World Trade Center, Central Park Summerstage, City Center, and New Victory Theater in NYC.
Parsons Dance consists of nine full-time dancers and maintains a repertory of more than 80 works, out of which 20 feature commissioned original scores by composers and musicians including Michael Gordon, Milton Nascimento, Dave Matthews, John Mackey, and Phil Woods. The dance company has also collaborated with many other artists such as William Ivey Long, Annie Leibovitz, Donna Karan, Julie Taymor, and Alex Katz.
