Otello Information
Giuseppe Verdi's opera Otello is based on Shakespeare's play Othello and set to an Italian libretto by Arrigo Boito. It was Verdi's penultimate opera, which premiered on February 5, 1887, at Milan's Teatro Alla Scala. After the success of Aida in 1871, the composer retired into seclusion, unwilling to write anything new.
It took his Milan publisher Giulio Ricordi ten years to persuade and cajole Verdi to see Boito's completed libretto for Otello in July/August 1881, first to encourage the revision of Verdi's 1857 Simon Boccanegra by introducing Boito as a librettist.
The process of drafting the early versions of the libretto and the years of revision that followed dragged on, despite Verdi's repeated denials. Composition began in 1884, five years after the initial drafts of the libretto, with the majority of the work completed in late 1885. When it eventually premiered in Milan on February 5, 1887, it was a smash hit, and other productions of Otello followed in major theaters around Europe and America.
