Oregon Ballet Information
The Oregon Ballet Theatre (abbreviated as "OBT") is a ballet group based in Portland. The company performs an annual five-program season at the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and conducts regional and national travels. It was featured in the October/November 2007 issue of Pointe magazine, featuring principal dancer Kathi Martuza on the cover.
The company is the outcome of the 1989 merger of Ballet Oregon and Pacific Ballet Theater. Oregon Ballet Theater's Artistic Director, James Canfield, was a dancer with the Joffrey Ballet and the main dancer of Pacific Ballet Theater. He led the company from its debut in 1993 until 2003. Under his supervision, the company repertory was developed to incorporate over 80 ballets, from evening-length compositions to contemporary ones.
From 2003 until his term ended in 2012, Christopher Stowell served as the company's artistic director. Under Stowell's direction, the company began performing works by such choreographers as Sir Frederick Ashton, Jerome Robbins, William Forsythe, Lar Lubovitch, and Christopher Wheeldon. James Kudelka, Trey McIntyre, Yuri Possokhov, Julia Adam, and Nicolo Fonte have all written brand-new pieces focusing on the firm. In addition, Christopher Stowell worked with the dancers in the company to create eight brand-new ballets.
