Opera Maine Information
Music Director of the Portland Symphony from 1976–1985, Bruce Hangen, wanted to start an opera company in Maine but couldn't find a suitable location in Portland. When the State Theatre became accessible in 1994, preparations could proceed. After convincing Dona D. Vaughn to take on the role of Stage Director for the nascent Portland Opera Repertory Theater, Hangen successfully rallied a group of friends and allies to find the company. After beginning as PORTopera in 2007, Opera Maine is the organization's current moniker as of 2017.
On its opening night in July 1995, the State Theatre presented Carmen. The critical and commercial triumph came quickly. The group first gained widespread attention in 1996 when it staged Puccini's Madama Butterfly—the 1996 season also marked the debut of PORTopera's Young Artist Program, a training initiative designed to advance the careers of promising young vocalists.
A full-scale performance of Puccini's Tosca marked PORTopera's 1997 return to Portland's Merrill Auditorium, which had recently undergone extensive renovations. There were no empty seats at either of the two shows. As a result, the Young Performer Program now features six opera performances across the state. Studio Artist Program replaced Young Artist Program in 2017, and the organization changed its name to Opera Maine.
