Nutcracker Fantasy Information
Based on the 1892 ballet, The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, and the 1816 novella "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" by E.T.A. Hoffmann, the Japanese-American stop-motion animated feature Sanrio made Nutcracker Fantasy. Written by Shintaro Tsuji, Eugene A. Fournier, and Thomas Joachim, it is directed by Takeo Nakamura.
Officially, it was made available to the public in Japan on March 3, 1979, and then it was made available in the US on July 6, 1979. It won the Young Artist Award for Best Musical Entertainment in 1980 and was nominated for Best Fantasy Film and Best Motion Picture starring Youth at the 1980 Saturn Awards.
One of Sanrio's earliest stop-motion endeavors was Nutcracker Fantasy. The film's animation style is a throwback to the classic Rankin/Bass "Animagic" films that Nakamura worked on when employed by Tadahito Mochinaga at MOM Production, now known as Video Tokyo Production.
On October 29, 2014, the film was shown at the 27th Tokyo International Film Festival in preparation for its official theatrical release the following month as part of Hello Kitty's 40th anniversary. Sanrio subsequently announced a remastered version of the film.
