Nicholas Charles Sparks (December 31, 1965) is an American screenwriter, philanthropist, and novelist. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Sparks is of German, Czech, English, and Irish origin and was nurtured in a Roman Catholic household. Sparks wrote his first unpublished novel, The Passing, during the summer between his first and second years at Notre Dame in 1985. In 1989, he wrote The Royal Murders, which remained unpublished.
Sparks applied to law school and sought a job with publishers after graduating from college but was denied both endeavors. He worked in various jobs for the next three years, including real estate appraisal, waiting tables, selling dental items over the phone, and launching his own manufacturing company.
Wokini: A Lakota Journey to Happiness and Self-Understanding, a nonfiction book about the effect of Lakota spiritual beliefs and practices, was co-written by Sparks and Billy Mills in 1990. Feather Publishing, Random House, and Hay House jointly published the book, which sold 50,000 copies in its first year.
Sparks began writing The Notebook in his leisure time while working in pharmaceutical sales in 1994. He was discovered in 1995 by literary agent Theresa Park, who chose The Notebook and offered to represent him. Park received a $1 million advance from Time Warner Book Group for The Notebook in October 1995. The novel, which was published in October 1996, debuted on the New York Times best-seller list in its first week and spent fifty-six weeks there.
