Neil Hamburger is a singer and fictional standup comedian. He was portrayed and created by Australian-American entertainer Gregg Turkington. He is characterized by his anti-comedy style and misanthropic jokes. Turkington released several albums as Hamburger as well as appeared in various films with this character, other media, and many television shows. The act eventually inspired a feature-length film named “Entertainment.” The film featured Turkington as a variant of the character of Neil Hamburger.
Turkington developed the character “Neil Hamburger” in the 1990s. He originally envisioned the concept as a “weird recording project,” originating from a prank call that appeared on Great Phone Calls Featuring Neil Hamburger (1992). The initial recordings of the Neil Hamburger were self-recorded by Turkington. His early recording found a cult audience that helped Turkington to meet the record label Drag City who issued his album in 1996 entitled “America’s Funnyman.” He released a few more albums on Drag City.
Hamburger frequently appeared on the internet talk show named “Tom Green’s House Tonight” from 2006 to 2013. He began his appearance as well in 2006, which was called “Poolside Chats with Neil Hamburger.” The show was aired on The Channel. Guests who have come to his show included Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, The Melvins, Kyle Gass of Tenacious D. Buzz Osborne, and Time & Eric. Hamburger’s studio albums include Raw Hamburger (1998), Left for Dead in Malaysia (1999), 50 States, 50 Laughs (2000), Great Moments at Di Presa’s Pizza House (2005), Neil Hamburger Sings Country Winners (2008), and several others.
