Nathaniel Philbrick Information
Nathaniel Philbrick (June 11, 1956) is an American history author. Philbrick attended Linden Elementary School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and then graduated from Taylor Allderdice High School. He graduated as a James B. Duke Fellow with a BA in English from Brown University and an MA in American literature from Duke University. In 1978, Philbrick became the first Intercollegiate All-American sailor at Brown University.
After his sailing triumphs, Philbrick's life took a different course. He spent four years as an editor at Sailing World magazine, a period that saw him juggling his professional aspirations with his responsibilities as a single parent. Despite the challenges, he managed to write and edit several books about sailing, including The Passionate Sailor, Second Wind, and Yaahting: A Parody. This phase of his life, where he was the primary caregiver for his two children, showcases his resilience and dedication.
His first history of the island, Away Off Shore, was released in 1994. In 1998, he wrote Abram's Eyes, a study of the native heritage of Nantucket. He is a major expert on the history of Nantucket, Massachusetts, and the founding director of the Egan Maritime Institute on Nantucket. He is also a research fellow at the Nantucket Historical Association.
