Michael McDonald (February 12, 1952) is an American singer, songwriter, record producer, and musician from St. Louis, Missouri. His music is defined as pop, rock, and blue-eyed soul. McDonald attended McCluer High School while playing in some local bands such as Jerry Jay and the Sheratons, the Reeb-Toors/Younger Brothers, Mike and the Majestics, and the Guild. In 1970, he moved to LA, California, to pursue his passion, music. Soon he became a member of Steely Dan's touring band in 1974 and provided backing vocals while appearing on many Steely Dan recordings.
McDonald joined Steely Dan in 2006 during their summer tour. He joined as part of the band and the opening act. Before going solo, he joined The Doobie Brothers on and off (1975–1982, 1987, 2019–present). McDonald wrote and sang many hit songs with the Doobie Brothers, such as "Minute by Minute," "What a Fool Believes," "Takin' It to the Streets."
As a solo artist, Michael McDonald released nine studio albums and several singles. Some of his notable albums are If That's What It Takes (1982), No Lookin' Back (1985), Take It to Heart (1990), Blue Obsession (2000), and Soul Speak (2008. He also released some Christmas albums such as Through the Many Winters, A Christmas Album (2005), This Christmas (2009), and Season of Peace: The Christmas Collection (2018). McDonald won 5 Grammy Awards for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocals, Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.
