Catalan flamenco singer Miguel Poveda, who has received widespread praise despite his young age, has always made it a point to pay tribute to the genre's illustrious musical heritage. Miguel Poveda León began his public singing career in 1988 when he accompanied his sister, flamenco dancer Sonia Poveda. He was born on February 13, 1973, in Barcelona.
After winning four awards at the 1993 Festival Nacional del Cante de las Minas in La Unión, including the top prize, La Lámpara Minera and La Cartagenera, La Malaguea, and La Soleá, he became a rising celebrity in the flamenco world. Since Antonio Fernández Daz (aka Fosforito) in 1956, no one else has performed such a feat. Poveda's achievement is much more impressive given that he is neither Andalusian nor Gypsy, as are most flamenco singers.
Following his breakthrough, Poveda starred in the Bigas Luna film La Teta y la Luna (1994), released his debut solo album Viento del Este (1995), and performed at several prestigious festivals, such as Madrid's El Festival Flamenco por Tarantos, Seville's Bienal de Arte Flamenco, and Paris's La Fiesta de la Msica. Following 1998's Suena Flamenco and 2001's Zaguán, 2004's Poemas del Exilio de Rafael Alberti, 2005's Desglaç, and 2006's Tierra de Calma are among his subsequent solo efforts.
