Marlee Matlin (August 24, 1965) is an American activist, author, and actress. She was born in Morton Grove, Illinois. She has won multiple awards and nominations, including an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and four Primetime Emmy Award nominations.
Oscar-winning actress Matlin, who has been deaf since 18 months old, made her acting debut as Sarah Norman in the romance drama Children of a Lesser God (1986)—both the youngest and first deaf artist to win Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
Matlin received two Golden Globe Award nominations for her lead role in the police drama series Reasonable Doubts (1991–1993) and four Primetime Emmy Award nominations for guest roles in Seinfeld (1993), Picket Fences (1993), The Practice (2000), and Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2004–2005).
She received the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for her work on CODA (2021). Matlin's interpreter, Jack Jason, is a well-known member of the National Association of the Deaf. She was honored with a star on the Walk of Fame in Hollywood in 2009.
