Malala Yousafzai (July 12, 1997) is a Pakistani female education activist who became a Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2014. She was born in Mingora, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. She was born to parents Ziauddin and Toor Pekai Yousafzai. Her Pashtun, Sunni Muslim ancestors, are from the Yusufzai tribe. Yousafzai was delivered home with the help of neighbors because her family did not have enough money to pay for a hospital birth.
The famed Pashtun poet and warrior woman Malalai of Maiwand inspired her parents to name their daughter Malala (meaning "grief-stricken"). She shared her home in Mingora with her parents, Ziauddin and Tor Pekai, her two younger brothers, Khushal and Atal, and two hens.
Proficient in English, Urdu, and Pashto, Yousafzai's father, poet, and educational activist, Ziauddin Yousafzai, educated her and ran a network of private schools named Khushal Public School. She once stated in an interview that being a doctor was her ultimate career goal; however, her father strongly urged her to pursue a political career instead. Ziauddin treated his daughter as unique, letting her remain late to discuss politics while her two boys were tucked into bed.
