Mae Martin Information
Mae Martin (May 2, 1987) is a Canadian-English screenwriter, actor, and comedian. He was born in Toronto, Ontario. Martin went to an all-girls school and often appeared on stage dressed in full regalia. Martin claims that he grew up in a "liberal utopia" where his parents' acceptance of his sexual orientation and those of his peers made Toronto a "paradise" in which to explore one's sexuality. The Canadian comedy group "The Young and the Useless" was where Martin got their start.
Martin, at age 16, made history as the youngest candidate ever for the Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award. Martin has contributed to the Canadian satirical series Baroness von Sketch Show through his work there. Because of their contributions to the show's writing staff, they have won two Canadian Screen Awards for Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Series. Martin wanted a new start in 2011, so he went to London. He immediately loved the city, but he worked a series of dead-end jobs while he tried to break into British comedy.
Their play at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2015, Mae Martin: Us, was so well received that it was adapted into the BBC Radio 4 series Mae Martin's Guide to 21st Century Sexuality. Martin has co-hosted the British variety show GrownUpLand and has made an appearance on the British television and radio show The Now Show. Dope, the 2017 Edinburgh event's name, alludes to recreational drugs and the brain chemical dopamine, which is linked to addictive behavior; after all, love is also a drug.
