Madama Butterfly Information
Giacomo Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly has three acts (up from two) and an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. John Luther Long's short narrative "Madame Butterfly" (1898) inspired the piece. Pierre Loti's semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème and tales related to Long by his sister Jennie Correll also had a role. Poco Puccini caught a performance of David Belasco's one-act play Madame Butterfly: A Tragedy of Japan in the summer of 1900 in London, following its premiere in New York in 1900. The play was based on Long's original work.
The first performance of the two-act opera took place on February 17, 1904, at Milan's La Scala. Despite starring renowned singers, including baritone Giuseppe De Luca, tenor Giovanni Zenatello, and soprano Rosina Storchio, it was critically panned. Puccini's late finish partly caused the lack of time for rehearsals. Among Puccini's many revisions to the opera was the division of Act II into two acts, the introduction of the Humming Chorus to transition to Act III and other alterations. Beginning with the inaugural performance on May 28, 1904, in Brescia, success followed.
