Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is home to the ballet group Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal (GBCM). As both a creative and repertory company, the company presents works that showcase the many directions that modern ballet has taken. Ludmilla Chiriaeff established the Montreal-based ballet company Les Grands Ballets Canadiens in 1957. Music director Michel Perrault was a conductor and composer.
Since its inception, Les Grands Ballets has showcased historical and cutting-edge dance. The institution nurtured notable artists like James Kudelka, Édouard Lock, and Ginette Laurin during the tenures of directors Chiriaeff and Fernand Nault, Brian Macdonald, and Lawrence Rhodes.
The Canadian Dance Spectacular, a 1981 dance performance at Ottawa's National Arts Centre, featured the company along with the National Ballet of Canada, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, le Groupe de la Place Royale, the Danny Grossman Dance Company, the Toronto Dance Theatre, the Winnipeg Contemporary Dancers, and the Anna Wyman Dance Theatre, and was filmed by the National Film Board of Canada for the 1982 documentary film Gala.
