Le Corsaire Information
The ballet Le Corsaire is usually performed in three acts, with the original text written by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and based on Lord Byron's poem The Corsair.
First performed on 23 January 1856 by the ballet of the Théâtre Impérial de l'Opéra in Paris, it was choreographed by Joseph Mazilier to music by Adolphe Adam and other composers. All current productions of Le Corsaire may be traced back to the revivals that Ballet Master Marius Petipa performed for the Imperial Ballet of St. Petersburg in the middle to late 19th century.
Le Jardin animé, the Pas d'esclave, the Pas de trois des odalisques, and the so-called Le Corsaire pas de deux (music mostly by Riccardo Drigo) are all celebrated sections of the ballet that are frequently excerpted from the full-length work and performed independently.
