Late Nite Catechism Information
Vicki Quade and Maripat Donovan's 1993 solo comedic drama Late Nite Catechism follows a made-up Catholic nun. The performance is a participatory theater in which the audience takes on the role of the nun's students in her classroom while the actress playing the role performs solo. Retired nuns in need receive financial assistance through the play. The writers discovered that the Catholic Church chose not to send nuns when Social Security was established in the US.
With the advent of social security, this has all changed. Nevertheless, every presenting organization is constantly allowed to raise donations for the local monastery. The actresses urge the audience to give generously if the offering is taken after the play. As of December 2012, over two million dollars had been raised for the retiring Sisters from the Late Nite Catechism business.
Donovan created the role of Sister. For her role in Late Nite Catechism, she received a nomination for the New York Outer Critics Circle Award for outstanding solo performance. In 1999, she took home the prize for Best Solo Performance from the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle and was nominated for two more awards for her writing and performance.
