La Boheme Information
La Boheme is a four-act opera founded between 1893 and 1895 by Giacomo Puccini. It was composed of an Italian libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica. La Boheme's discography is said to be a long one. The opera was adapted into a short story by the novelist V. S. Pritchett in 1983. Metropolitan Opera Association then published the novel. La bohème is renowned for being a loose influence for Jonathan Larson's Broadway musical Rent.
The story of La Boheme is based on Scènes de la vie de bohème (1851) by Henri Murger. It is in Italian and premiered for the first time on February 1, 1896, in Teatro Regio, Turin. The story of La Boheme is set in 1830 Paris. It shows the Bohemian lifestyle known as "La bohème" in French or a poor seamstress and her artist friends.
La Boheme quickly became popular in Italy with some notable companies that mounted opera productions. This includes The Teatro Comunale di Bologna (November 4, 1896), The Teatro di San Carlo (March 14, 1896), The Teatro Costanzi (November 17, 1896), La Fenice (December 26, 1897), and Teatro Regio di Parma (January 29, 1898).
An English-translated libretto was used in a 2019 production by Canada's Against the Grain Theatre, which set the tale in an urban Canadian setting.
