Kyle Abraham Information
Kyle Abraham (August 14, 1977) is an American dancer and choreographer. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. At the Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School and the Civic Light Opera Academy in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he started dancing when he was a little child. A BFA from SUNY Purchase, an M.F.A. from the N.Y.U. Tisch School of the Arts, and an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from Washington Jefferson College were all awards he received for his further dance studies in New York.
David Dorfman approached Abraham to join his company after Abraham had his M.F.A. Later, he performed with the following dance ensembles: The Kevin Wynn Collective, Nathan Trice/Rituals, Dance Alloy, and Attack Theatre. He also performed for the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company. Kyle Abraham (previously known as Abraham.In.Motion) founded his firm A.I.M. by Kyle Abraham in 2006 to produce dance-based works that are inspired by Black culture and history.
Abraham develops work for his company based on his experiences, frequently examining Black existence, emotion, and the interplay of visual, musical, and dance arts. The Royal Ballet awarded Abraham two overseas commissions for 2021 and 2022. In May 2021, Optional Family, a divertissement by Abraham created for their 21st Century Choreographers program, made its debut. The Royal Ballet hired him as the first Black choreographer to create a one-act ballet, which will debut in the spring of 2022.
