Kate Tempest Information
Kae Tempest is an English spoken playwright, novelist, recording artist, poet, and word performer. She was born in Westminster, London. At sixteen, Tempest made her first public appearance at open mic evenings hosted by Deal Real, a small hip-hop store in London's West End. From there, they backed up artists like John Cooper Clarke, Billy Bragg, and Benjamin Zephaniah. Before being commissioned to write their first play, Wasted, the members of Tempest performed worldwide with the band Sound of Rum until the group disbanded in 2012.
A limited version of Everything Speaks in its Own Way was published by Tempest in 2013 under their imprint, Zingaro. In 2012, at the age of 26, they debuted the theatrical spoken word piece Brand New Ancients at the Battersea Arts Centre to widespread praise. The work also received the Ted Hughes Prize and the Tempest the Herald Angel. Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, W. B. Yeats, William Blake, W. H. Auden, and the Wu-Tang Clan are just a few of the authors and artists who have influenced Tempest.
Hopelessly Devoted, a play by both authors, had its world debut at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in September 2013. Production credit goes to Dan Carey for the group's 2014 album, Everybody Down (Big Dada, Ninja Tune), which was shortlisted for the Mercury Music Prize. In 2015, Tempest was honored by being inducted as a Member of the Royal Society of Literature.
