Jose Andres Information
José Ramón Andrés Puerta (July 13, 1969) is a Spanish-American restaurateur, chef, and founder of World Central Kitchen (WCK). He is from Mieres, Asturias, Spain, and enrolled in culinary school in Barcelona when he was 15. At 18, he was assigned to cook for an admiral. Soon he met Ferran Adrià in Barcelona and started to work at El Bulli.
Puerta arrived in New York City with $50 in his pocket. He planned to cook in midtown Manhattan and at the same time, he staged servings at The Quilted Giraffe. In 1993, he began serving at Jaleo, a new tapas restaurant in Washington, D.C and helped the owner open more restaurants. Puerta initiated a minibar – a restaurant space within a larger restaurant (Cafe Atlantico) in 2003. As a celebrity chef, he debuted his show named Vamos a Cocinar in 2005. Tapas: A Taste of Spain in America was his first book that was published the same year.
