Jonathan Van Ness Information
Jonathan McDonald Van Ness (March 28, 1987) is a well-known American hairstylist, podcast host, and T.V. personality. He goes by the initials J.V.N. His most notable roles include hosting the podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness, contributing to the web series parody Gay of Thrones, and playing the role of grooming expert on the Netflix series Queer Eye.
Van Ness worked as an assistant for Sally Hershberger in Los Angeles. In 2012, he passed out in the salon while working on a client's highlights. Ness was 25 years old at the time. Along with Monique Northrop of New York City's Arte Salon, he co-founded Stile Salon in Los Angeles, where he worked at MoJoHair.
While styling the hair of Funny or Die colleague Erin Gibson in 2013, Van Ness was asked by Gibson to do a recap of an episode of Game of Thrones for Funny or Die; this became the Gay of Thrones web series. Primetime Emmy Award nominees for Outstanding Short Form Variety Series included Van Ness in 2018.
Van Ness has been starring as the hairstylist on the Queer Eye revival on Netflix since 2018. Peanut Goes for the Gold is a picture book by Van Ness published in 2020 about a nonbinary guinea pig called Peanut who becomes a rhythmic gymnastics superstar. Peanut was modeled after Van Ness's pet from his youth.
Van Ness published Love That Story: Observations from a Gorgeously Queer Life, a book of essays, in 2022.
