John Paul Cusack (June 28, 1966) is an American screenwriter, producer, and actor born in Evanston, Illinois. As early as the 1980s, Cusack was already appearing in film roles. The Sure Thing (1985), directed by Rob Reiner, was his breakthrough role. Say Anything..., Cameron Crowe's first feature picture as a director, also included him (1989). In Stephen Frears' neo-noir thriller The Grifters (1990), Cusack as a con artist. In Roland Emmerich's monumental disaster picture 2012, Cusack played the role of Jackson Curtis (2009).
Accusing Hollywood of stepping in with 50-producer movies, franchises ruling, and stars used as leverage, Cusack attacked the industry in 2014. The movie industry was his words: "a whorehouse and people go mad."
Police in Chicago pepper-sprayed and baton-swung Cusack in May 2020 as he was live-streaming a George Floyd demonstration. Cusack tweeted about his experience at the Pro-Palestinian March in Chicago on October 15, 2023. Cusack felt bad for the Palestinian demonstrators and spoke out against the attacks by Israel.
