John Cleese Information
John Marwood Cleese (October 27, 1939) is an English actor, comedian, screenwriter, and producer. The Cambridge Footlights of the 1960s gave way to his initial successes at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and on The Frost Report. He also appeared as a performer and playwright in these events. He helped form the comic group Monty Python in the late '60s, best known for their satirical television series Monty Python's Flying Circus.
Fawlty Towers, a sitcom he featured in as hotel owner Basil Fawlty in the mid-1970s, earned Cleese the 1980 British Academy Television Award for Best Entertainment Performance. Channel 4's poll of viewers in 2001 placed Basil at No. 2 on its list of the 100 Greatest TV Characters. The British Film Institute named the number one program on its list the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes in 2000.
Cleese set off on his first-ever cross-Canada comedy tour in September and October 2013. His tour, dubbed "John Cleese: Last Time to See Me Before I Die," took him from Halifax to Ottawa to Toronto, Edmonton to Calgary to Victoria, and finally to Vancouver, with nearly every show selling out. In November 2013, Cleese played to a sold-out crowd in Dubai after a long absence from the stage.
He played the lead role in the 2023 drama film The Palace, directed by Roman Polanski. Cleese and Andrew Doyle co-hosted a GB News program in 2023. In this program, he was trying to encourage "proper argument" as he stated.
