Joel Edward McHale is a television host, writer, actor, comedian, and producer. He was born in Rome and grew up on Mercer Island, Washington. McHale briefly lived in Haddonfield, New Jersey, before returning to Mercer Island. McHale went to Mercer Island High School and received a bachelor’s degree in 1995 from the University of Washington in history. McHale is known for hosting The Soup from 2004 to 2015. He is also known for his role as Jeff Winger on Community, the NBC sitcom from 2009 to 2015.
McHale has appeared in several films, including Ted (2012), Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011), and Open Season 2 (2008). He has also appeared as a star in the short-lived CBS sitcom entitled, The Great Indoors, from 2016 to 2017. He currently hosts a reboot of Card Sharks. Since 2020, McHale has also been portraying the superhero Sylvester Pemberton / Starman on the show Stargirl. McHale also hosted a special aftershow in 2020, where he interviewed key subjects from the Netflix documentary series Tiger King. He has performed as a voice artist in Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, in which he voiced Johnny Cage.
In 2011, McHale won the EWwy Award for the Best Actor in a Comedy. His television appearances include Nickelodeon’s Unfiltered (2021), Crime Scene Kitchen (2021), American Housewife (2021), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (2020), Celebrity Wheel of Fortune (2021), The Cabin with Bert Kreischer (2020), and many others.
