John Irving Bloom, a.k.a Joe Bob Briggs (January 27, 1953), is an American comic performer, actor, writer, and syndicated film critic born in Dallas, Texas. Bloom worked as a sportswriter for the Arkansas Democrat when he was just 13 years old. He grew up in Little Rock. While studying English at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, he was awarded the Fred Russell-Grantland Rice Sportswriting Scholarship. He contributed to the school newspaper, The Vanderbilt Hustler. In 1975, after completing school.
Bloom's character "Briggs" is an unashamed redneck Texan who adores drive-in movies. His forte is humorously enthusiastic assessments of "drive-in movies" (as opposed to "indoor bull stuff"), his term for B-pictures and cult classics. In 1986, "Briggs" was asked to be a guest host on Drive-in Theater, a late-night B-movie show on The Movie Channel (TMC), because of the success of the stage act.
"Briggs" also served as a pundit on a Fox TV news magazine for two years. In addition, he had recurring roles as Billy Ray Wetnap, co-owner of Pest Boys Pest Control, on seasons 8 and 9 of the Fox sitcom Married... with Children. In addition to working on an unaired NBC series with fellow comedian Norman Steinberg, he has written and acted in specials for Fox and Showtime.
