American mezzo-soprano J'Nai Bridges has won two Grammys. She has sung at the San Francisco Opera, the Washington National Opera, and the Metropolitan Opera, where she was honored with the Marian Anderson Award. She is the operatic equivalent of Beyoncé, according to BET. Bridges was born and raised in Lakewood, Washington, and went to high school at Tacoma's Charles Wright Academy. Her elective choir class sparked a new interest in singing when she had previously focused on basketball.
She attended the Manhattan School of Music and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia for her undergraduate and graduate music education. After winning a Marian Anderson Award in 2012, Bridges performed for the first time at the Kennedy Center. 2015 she attempted to win the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition. She sang the role of Nefertiti in Philip Glass's Akhnaten at the Los Angeles Opera in November of 2016.
As Josefa Segovia, she made her San Francisco Opera debut in the 2017 premiere of Girls of the Golden West by John Adams. Returning to San Francisco in June 2019, she played Carmen in Bizet's opera. She sang Akhnaten for the second time at the Metropolitan Opera in November 2019, and she sang Delilah in Samson and Delilah by Saint-Sans at the Washington National Opera in March 2020.
