Jerrod Carmichael Information
Jerrod Carmichael (April 6, 1987) is an American filmmaker, writer, actor, and stand-up comedian. He was born in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Carmichael's stand-up routines often revolve around his disadvantaged upbringing. In fifth grade, he was the anchor of a morning news program on the school's cable channel. He graduated from Robert B. Glenn High School in Kernersville, North Carolina, in 2005. His early comic heroes included George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Sinbad.
Without ever having performed stand-up comedy before, Carmichael traveled to Los Angeles at age 20 to follow his passion. A chance encounter at an open mic night at West Hollywood's The Comedy Store was his introduction to stand-up. In 2011, he moved from the clubs to the "New Faces" segment at Montreal's Just for Laughs Festival. He made his acting debut in Neighbors and has since been on The Goodwin Games (2013) TV show. (2014).
The Comedy Store served as the setting for his debut HBO stand-up special, Love at the Store (2014), which Spike Lee directed. Filmed at the Grand Lodge Room of New York's Masonic Hall, Carmichael's second stand-up comedy special, 8 (2017), was directed by fellow comedian Bo Burnham. Subsequently, Carmichael co-created, co-wrote, produced, and acted in the semi-autobiographical NBC sitcom The Carmichael Show (2015–2017).
