Jena Friedman is an American writer and comedian. She was born in Haddonfield, New Jersey. She attended Northwestern University to study anthropology. After graduating, she worked as a healthcare consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton. She has made TV appearances on Conan, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore, National Geographic Explorer, MSNBC, BBC Two, and the Sundance smash Palm Springs.
She created The Refugee Girls Revue in 2007, a parody of American Girl dolls. The play received favorable reviews at the 2008 New York International Fringe Festival and enjoyed a prosperous Off-Broadway run. The New York Times sent her a cease-and-desist letter in 2010 for making fun of their wedding films. The parody, Ted and Gracie, is now a well-liked web sitcom.
Friedman's solo performance, American Cunt, made its Edinburgh Festival Fringe debut in 2015 to rave reviews. American Cunt was ranked among the top 10 stand-up comedy specials of 2016 by Paste. She and Jena Friedman co-created the Adult Swim specials series Soft Focus, which she also co-executively produces, directs, and hosts.
